Mental Grounding Techniques
Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, hold empty for 4 seconds. Repeat 4 times to down-regulate your nervous system and instantly reduce acute stress responses.
Acknowledge 5 things you see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste. This shifts focus from intrusive anxious thoughts back to the present moment.
Identify an automatic negative thought (e.g. "I will fail"). Write down evidence supporting it, then evidence contradicting it. Finally, form a balanced, realistic perspective (e.g. "This is challenging, but I have prepared").
